How It All Started
Modesty Shorts began the way most bands do — a group of friends who loved music getting together to jam on weekends. Based in the Newton and Boston area, we started playing classic rock covers in basements and garages, never imagining where it would lead.
But somewhere between learning our favorite songs and playing our first local gig, something clicked. We realized that music wasn't just about entertaining people — it was about bringing them together. And if we could bring people together, we could do something meaningful with that energy.
Our First Fundraiser
Our first charity event was a small gathering at a local Newton venue. We partnered with friends who had personal connections to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute — people who had been patients, family members of survivors, and healthcare workers who saw the impact of cancer research firsthand.
That first night, we raised a few thousand dollars. It wasn't a huge number by any measure, but the energy in the room was electric. People weren't just donating — they were dancing, singing along, connecting with each other over shared experiences and shared hope. We knew immediately that this was something we had to keep doing.
Growing the Impact Year After Year
Over the following years, our charity events grew. What started as a single annual fundraiser expanded into multiple events per year — benefit concerts, silent auctions paired with live music, corporate-sponsored charity nights, and community block parties where every dollar at the door went to Dana-Farber.
Local businesses stepped up as sponsors. Other musicians sat in with us for special performances. The Newton and Greater Boston community embraced the mission, and the numbers kept climbing. $5,000 became $10,000. $10,000 became $20,000. And before we knew it, we had crossed the $40,000 mark in total donations to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Why Dana-Farber?
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is one of the world's leading cancer research and treatment centers, right here in Boston. For our band members, the connection is deeply personal. Several of us have had family members treated at Dana-Farber, and we've seen firsthand how their groundbreaking research translates into real hope for real families.
Every dollar raised goes toward funding research that could lead to the next breakthrough treatment, supporting patients and their families during the hardest times of their lives, and training the next generation of oncologists. It's a cause that hits close to home for nearly everyone in the Boston area.
Beyond the Money
While the $40,000+ figure is something we're incredibly proud of, the real impact goes far beyond dollars and cents. Our events have become gathering places for cancer survivors, their families, and the broader community. They're nights of celebration, resilience, and solidarity.
We've had survivors tell us that our events were the first time they felt like celebrating after treatment. We've seen strangers become friends over shared stories. We've watched entire communities rally around a cause because the music gave them a reason to show up. That's the real magic of what we do.
What's Next
We're not slowing down. Our goal is to continue growing our fundraising efforts, expand to more venues across Greater Boston, and partner with even more organizations that share our mission. We're also looking to mentor other local bands who want to use their music for charitable causes.
If you're planning a charity event, fundraiser, or benefit concert in the Boston area, we'd love to be part of it. Music and charity are in our DNA, and we believe that together, we can rock our way to an even bigger impact.
